[WS:] I think the answer to this question is "absolutely not" in the same sense as the Nazi reaction to the burning of the Reichstag in 1933 was not an "overreaction" - but a carefully orchestrated by a fascist elite response to loony and otherwise insignificant act of sabotage. Both events provided the fascists an opportunity to consolidate their power by launching a carefully planned fear mongering campaign.
The very question "did *we* overreact?" is misleading in this context. In both situations "we" - by which I mean the gullible public - did not overreact to the original sabotage event, but was skillfully manipulated to a frenzy by professional propagandists in the aftermath of that event.
