SEOUL, June 30 (Xinhua) -- South Korea resumed shipment of rice assistance to the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) on Saturday after more than one year's suspension.

A South Korean ship carrying 3,000 tons of rice left South Korea's Gunsan port earlier in the day for DPRK's Nampo Port, the Unification Ministry said.

South Korea pledged to send a total of 400,000 tons of rice to DPRK. The Unification Ministry said the shipment of all the rice assistance will be completed within six months.

The delivery of rice was conducted the same day inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) described their five-day visit to DPRK as "fruitful."

Local media reported that South Korean and DPRK officials met in DPRK's border city of Kaesong this weekend to discuss energy aid to DPRK. During the meeting, South Korea agreed to send 50,000 tons of heavy oil to DPRK within two weeks.
