Oil a factor in Australian role in Iraq: minister by Neil Sands 28 minutes ago SYDNEY (AFP) - Oil is a key factor keeping Australian troops in the US-led war in Iraq, Defence Minister Brendan Nelson said Thursday, before his boss Prime Minister John Howard sharply contradicted him. *************

Even the editors of "The West" (the only daily in all of Western Australia) took note of this one. "The West Australian" usually serves as a Liberal Party cheerleader, but yesterday's fish wrap had an article and editorial which read much like one of the leftist leaflets I picked up at those 2003 demos before the invasion of Iraq. They had Howard quotes from '03 saying that "we" were going to war to save the world from WMD getting into the hands of terrorists and then quotes from a couple of years later, claiming that "we" had sent troops to unseat a dictator and now this, oil, the very commodity which the left was saying was the reason all along. His Defence Minister is just saying what he hears in cabinet meetings all the time: that much is clear.

Yet, Howard and his Liberal/National Coalition will still win the upcoming Commonwealth election, unless the Labor Party can convince people that Howard is not the reason why the economy is booming. And he's not. It's a mining boom, fer chris-sakes. Hell, WA where the mining boom is largely taking place, is ruled by the Labor Party. So is Queensland--the other place where large portions of Australia (with coal in them) are being mined by workers and sent off by capitalists to places like China to be burned--for profit, of course. Oh happy days for global warming. But, Liberal Party propaganda is spewing forth the notion that because they've "tamed" the "militant" unionists (made lots of union activity subject to criminal penalties), there is greater prosperity for "the nation".

Howard's got his latest big lie floating out there too: that he's saving the Aboriginal children from being abused by adult Aboriginals. He used this one well, albeit in a different form back in a previous erection when he declared that illegal "boat people" were throwing their children overboard into the sea.

These heartless aliens were being opposed by our fealess leader and his government, while the "weak" Labor Party types were being "soft" on these child abusers. Meanwhile, of course, nothing will actually be done to solve any of the problems of child abuse anywhere in Australia and in fact, money being spent on social services will constantly be under attack. It's the conservative way. It's also the image game which constitute core politics in bourgeois democracies.

The lies are all pretty sickening. One thing that many, maybe even most Australian workers know now: if Howard says X is happening, you'd best undersand that as meaning that notX is happening.
