That's a lot of help. And your recommendation in the circumstances? Is there anything we should fight for or against? How will I sell this idea to anyone in our broad constituency: all hitherto existing social ideas have failed and no one has the slightest idea how to proceed or what might replace them even in the vaguest outline. I have no idea how different economic or political forms might be better, all I know is that markets, central planning, democratic representation, and constitutional civil liberties are all washed up. We should, therefore, not struggle for these ideals or institutions or cavil about their destruction. We should just -- struggle. Unite. Fight -- what? Against what? For what? Can't say. Things suck. That's about the limit. Wovon man nicht sprechen kann, darüber muß man schweigen. -- Sounds to me like a perfect recipe for cynical abandonment of politics or adherence to the enemies of liberalism and socialism who have, so they they think, a clue -- for example the Christofascists or the Islamists.
