[lbo-talk] Brit lit goes to hell

I've read a couple of WM, have a stack of others. They are a lot of fun, not especially memorable. Pictures of a racist, corrupt and money-dominated society, nothing much deeper than that, nor any notion of resistance. The protagonist is a loner who wins by surviving. Pretty standard, though the portrayal and writing to me are uncommonly good and perceptive.

The movie w/Denzel Washington is very nice too and gives a good flavor of the books.

The most remarkable thing about the film (Devil in a Blue Dress) is the ending shot -- a counter-stereotypical tableau of an African-American neighborhood before the devastation wrought by the flight of manufacturing jobs and drugs. Radical in its own way.
