Jamshedpur, June 27, 2007

The Uranium Processing Plant at Turamdih near Jamshedpur, was dedicated to the nation on Monday. It is aimed at augmenting uranium production to meet the increasing domestic power requirements. India has a target of 25 per cent clean electricity from nuclear power by 2050.

According to Dr Anil Kakodkar, chairman, Atomic Energy Commission, and secretary, Department of Atomic Energy, the Turamdih ore processing plant has a capacity of 3,000 tonnes and is the country's biggest uranium processing plant. The capacity of the existing Jadugora plant is 2,090 tonnes. "We propose to raise the new mill's capacity to 4,500 tonnes by next year," Kakodkar said.
