The World Bank has approved US $155.21 million for a transport project in Hanoi to promote environmentally sustainable transport.
The World Bank Board of Directors agreed on the funding for the Hanoi Urban Transport Development Project on July 3, according to a press release. "Environmental and traffic issues will be a key challenge for Vietnam in the future as cities grow and vehicle ownership increases," said William D. O. Paterson, Acting Country Director for the World Bank in Vietnam. He added that the project is designed to address some of these needs in ways that can later be replicated nationwide.
The project will help Hanoi develop a Bus Rapid Transit System, including 37 kilometres segregated bus lanes and 9 kilometres of bus priority lanes along the Giang Vo-Lang Ha and Giai Phong-Dai Co Viet corridors, its related facilities, and the acquisition of 130 vehicles.
The project will also support Hanoi in the construction of a section of the Second Ring Road between Nhat Tan Bridge and Cau Giay, as well as in improving the city's sustainable urban land development and transportation planning.
