If it was so ineffective, then why was the backlash so strong?

[WS:] I do not think that the backlash was against the 1970s style radicalism. It was more against the post-Vietnam war liberalism in foreign policy and domestic programs that looked to many as 'socialism' - and later against the Black crime, both real and the image of it magnified for political purposes by the Repugs. BTW, the 1970s radical rhetoric was negligible vis a vis the "moderate" MLK. MLK's shift from race to class was far more threatening than all the hot air from Black Panthers, Symbionese Liberation Army, and fellow travelers.
