The Vietnam Administration of Preventive Medicine and the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on June 14 initiated a co-operative programme for fighting avian influenza.
The five-year project will be carried out at an estimated cost of over US $7 million in nine provinces and cities across the country, namely Hanoi, Thai Binh, Lang Son, Hoa Binh, Thua Thien Hue, Khanh Hoa, Da Nang, Dong Nai and Tien Giang.
The first year of the programme, starting from April 2007, will be provided to the tune of US $1.15 million.
US Ambassador to Vietnam Michael Marine stressed that this project will create a strong new partnership between the US and Vietnamese health organisations, and complement other avian influenza projects in Vietnam which were supported by the US Agency for International Development and the US Department of Agriculture.
He spoke highly of the achievements made by Vietnam, one of the countries hardest hit by bird flu, in controlling the epidemic.
According to the US diplomat, the US provided more than US $12 million to the government of Vietnam in support of the country's efforts in combating and controlling bird flu.
An outbreak reoccurred in Vietnam's 17 cities and provinces after being kept under control for more than 17 months. (VNA)
