E.J. Dionne, whose politics are tepid but who is not stupid, said on some TV show the other night that he doubted Bloomberg would run for precisely that reason. He knows that he'd take votes from Dems and hand the Reps the presidency, and he doesn't want that to happen. He may be right. But a guy who could easily afford to spend $1 billion on a campaign might find his ego calling the shots.
