Jim,

Loaded question .... For one thing, many Muslim countries ("the Muslim world") are in Africa: Morocco, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, the Sudan, Mauritania, Senegal, and others. Obviously, inhabitants of all these places are African, and in Sudan, for example, a lot of interbreeding between Arab occupiers and native tribal groups. A lot of the attacks in Sudan, where ethnically Arab raiders attack villages -- and notice a lot of these Arab raiders look different than, say, Arabs from Syria -- are actually attacking other Muslims who happen to be tribespeople.

In Cairo, for example, there are a lot of what in the USA we would call "black people," but they're Arab -- and I've met Arabs with pale skin, blue eyes, and red hair as well.

But yes, there were Arab slavers, of course. Original Arab Muslims had them. The tale of Bilal, a dark-skinned African slave belonging to one of Muhammad's inner circle, being freed, is a famous tale in Islamic lore: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bilal_ibn_Ribah

"Prophet Muhammad chose Bilal as his muezzin. He was among the slaves freed by Abu Bakr and was known for his beautiful voice with which he called people to their prayers. His name can also be spelled as, "Bilal ibn Riyah" or "ibn Rabah" and he is sometimes known as "Bilal al-Habashi" or "Bilal the Ethiopian". He died sometime between 638 to 642, dying when he was just over sixty years old."
