This is a bit of a tangent off this discussion, but I have noticed a curious tendency to attribute ideas to writers such as Zizek and Gayatri Spivak that have their development in earlier writers. I think that this is an interesting moment of this. After all, this has been remarked upon by many other folks before Zizek. (Foucault, Luxemburg, Castoriadis, etc.) We can see something similar in the Spivak effect. I have had grad students explain to me that subaltern is a concept developed by her, ignoring its Marxist roots and the work by figures such as Ranajit Guha.
