RIYADH: Saudi Arabia's Interior Ministry said on Wednesday that a Pakistani man convicted of theft in the kingdom had his right hand cut off as punishment.
In a statement carried by the official SPA news agency, the ministry confirmed that Mohammad Hajji Gholam had been sentenced to have his hand amputated in Medina after he was found guilty of theft.
The penalty for theft in Saudi Arabia, which applies a strict form of Sharia law, is amputation of the right hand. In cases of a repeat offence, the left hand is also severed. The kingdom applies the death penalty for rape, murder, apostasy, armed robbery and drug trafficking. afp
