As an inexhaustible source of pretentious twaddle, the Economist is rivaled only by the Financial Times -- a publication that is arguably even more irritating than the Economist because of its show-offish salmon-colored stock. The Economist and FT stand as prime examples of Britain's sad, lingering megalomania, since both publications contrive to give the impression that the UK is still running a sunset-proof empire -- not a shabby museum of Industrial Revolution technology burdened with an oversized military establishment, irrelevant to world events and peripheral even to European affairs.
