BEIJING, March 13 (Reuters) - China's cabinet has approved a a plan by Intel Corp. (INTC.O: Quote, Profile, Research) to invest $2.5 billion in a microchip plant in the northeastern city of Dalian, the National Development and Reform Commission said on Tuesday.
The 12-inch wafer plant will have a monthly capacity of 52,000 chips, said the NDRC on its Web site.
Intel, which has invested about $1 billion in China to date, already has major test and assembly plants in Shanghai and the interior city of Chengdu. Intel is in the midst of a major overhaul, including price and job cuts and new product roll-outs, as it works to stave off recent advances by rival Advanced Micro Devices Inc., which has gained market share in the last few years.
