The concept of the lumpen has no analytic power -- but if one must use it, the concept of being declassed has to be central -- which means that to understand lumpen in the u.s. one must begin by identifying police & prison guards as central to the lumpen element. Wojtek's hysteria puts him among the lumpen too.
