My mother is a retired kindergarten teacher. Her job included spending time
reading and attending conferences about how children learn to read, how they
understand math, etc. There's plenty of academic learning happening in a good
kindergarten class in addition to the development of social skills (which are
pretty important). There's a great deal more to it than coloring and eating
snacks.
Despite the importance of the job and the skill it required, she actually got
less take home pay than I was making as a graduate research assistant.
Shameful to say the least.
