Maybe I am romanticizing, but that sounds like a pretty damned interesting job.
The only part of my mechanic job that is at all interesting are the people I meet, especially in their homes where I can get a good clear picture of them at people and how their lives are lived.
While I am working on chairs, I usually start some light conversation and if they sound interesting I start asking them questions about themselves... Sometimes this leads to astonishing stuff.
