BEIJING, Apr. 23 -- South Korea says it will send 400,000 tons of rice aid
to the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.
The aid delivery is one of a series of agreements reached during the latest
meeting of the "Inter-Korean Committee for the Promotion of Economic
Cooperation" held in Pyongyang.
The DPRK and South Korea wrapped up their meeting with a series of
agreements.
Chin Dong-Soo, ROK chief delegate, said, "South Korea will provide 400,000
tons of rice in the form of a loan to the DPRK on humanitarian grounds."
The agreement says the first batch will be sent in late May.
Both sides have also agreed to conduct test runs of trains on lines that
connect railways between South Korea and the DPRK.
Ju Tong Chan, DPRK chief delegate, said, "The DPRK and South Korea will hold
a related working-level contact in Kaesong on April 27th-28th. And we will
cooperate to begin service at the Gyeongui and Donghae railways and roads at
the earliest possible date."
The DPRK and South Korea have also signed economic cooperation agreements
related to light industry, mining, fisheries and the enlargement of Kaesong
industry park.
The next meeting of the committee will be in South Korea in July.
