Indeed. But I thought we were talking about lynching -- an extrajudicial
affair. Nobody much lynches in the classical sense any more, but police
fusillades of the type that have become quite common in my adopted hometown
of New York and elsewhere bear, I think, a certain family resemblance to the
older practice.
