MUMBAI (Reuters) - Indian mobile phone service providers added more than 4 million GSM customers in April, taking the total user base to 125.6 million, a telecoms industry body said on Friday.

The Cellular Operators' Association of India, which represents nine carriers offering wireless services based on the widely-prevalent GSM platform, said 4.13 million users signed up in April, compared with 6.13 million in March. Bharti Airtel Ltd., India's top mobile service provider, added 1.75 million customers in April, taking its user base to 38.9 million.

State-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. added 326,973 customers, taking its user base to 27.8 million, while Hutchison Essar Ltd.'s 1.26 million new customers lifted its user base to 27.7 million.

British giant Vodafone has completed the acquisition of a controlling stake in Hutchison Essar for $10.9 billion.

Reliance Communications is India's second largest mobile services provider, but most of its subscribers are on the CDMA platform. The company had more than 28 million subscribers as of end-March.
