Yes, essentially, though the other part is that Daimler wanted to unload Chrysler. The only way this deal makes any sense is if wages and benefits for existing workers are cut deeply, and pension and health benefits for retirees are sliced as well. And if Chrysler gets those things, GM and Ford will want them too. It could get very ugly, though the UAW is giving every sign of rolling over so far.
