I guess it was about 40 years ago that a friend told me high pay mattered little to his CEO father -- that his father enjoyed his job so much he would the work for virtually nothing. That always struck me as an excellent reason for introducing socialism and making pay generally even across society. Yes, the sheer gratification of exercising organizational power should be considered reward enough for managerial-types without giving them truly *gross* gross earnings also. However, if top managers persist childishly in requiring some way "to keep score" about their achievements, they should be entitled to the traditional honor of wearing one or more gold stars on their forehead.
