Hard to believe of Ann C,, but Joe McCarthy was also. He was baffled that people hated him, it was just a show for him. He never got taht his show ruined lives. He was wasn't even _particularly_ anticommunist, I mean, he didn't like commies, who did in America in the 1950s?, but it wasn't a big deal for him except as a grandstand. He got on that bandwagon because Kefauver beat him to organized crime.

For all the somewhat harsh things I have said about Chuck as a person, he certainly was not anywhere near as bad in private as Falwell was in public!
