[lbo-talk] Journalism prof. admits plagiarizing material from student

An unsavory kind of plagiarism occurred on this list once, to me.

If you remember, awhile back I posted to LBO-Talk some research/finding I'd discovered on my own. And, lo and behold, soon after it mysteriously appeared on -- if memory serves -- the blog of a contributing editor of, I think, Harper's, or maybe it was Atlantic Monthly. (Too busy to search right now.)

The wording on the blog entry this fellow wrote was an almost verbatim reproduction of my post to LBO-Talk. I think the blog-writer for the major magazine was/is a lurker on LBO, and it seems he decided he'd just lift it from me, and prbably get away with it. Well, I found it, it really sucked. This wasn't some news piece I had forwarded; it was something I had personally written.

In response, Doug thankfully sent out a warning to the list that that sort of thing was frowned upon. I "joked" -- but was/am actually serious -- that I'd be glad to be hired as a research assistant to this writer/editor, if he wanted more good stuff! Of course, I never got offered anything. And it isn't like I don't need the money.

I'd still take the job. :)

"Hmm, I know of a certain radical professor of one of the social sciences who is very prolific. His works are often 'co-authored,' but that generally means the non-famous member of the duo wrote the piece or book. It's rampant."
