I couldn't agree more. But it was a strange experience to read it in an undergrad Faulkner course taught by Cleanth Brooks, who never missed an opportunity to talk up the Fugitive line. E.g., the South wasn't fighting to defend slavery, but an anti-market way of life. Who knew Eugene Genovese would follow in his footsteps?
