There is this reflex on the left to try to list every problem, every injured group, every conceivable sadness - and to take the omission of one as symptomatic of something or other. At a 1992 rally for Jerry Brown in NYC, I heard Bella Abzug deliver a perfect example of that - in something like five minutes she must have listed 20 or 30 instances of oppression and misery. Thank god The Ramones came on a few minutes later, and Joey delivered one of the greatest political messages in history, even if it was for the wrong guy: "I fucking never voted in my fucking life but I'm fucking voting for fucking Jerry Brown, man."
