Regarding Joanna's request for suggestions on Spanish poetry: Gustavo Adolfo Becquer, the Spanish poet of the early nineteenth century, is very good on romance, love and death, but it's dated stuff. He is easy to read though. Amado Nervo, the Mexican poet, and the Cuban Jose Marti, have great poems of love that are written simply. The Argentinian Alfonsina Storni is also clear and beautiful. I would also recommend some of the shorter poems of Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz on love and cruel men ("Hombres necios que acusais . . . "). For your daughter's eventual reading, Luis de Gongora has the most beautiful and intricate Spanish, but he's very difficult to read because of all the hyperbatons.

Happy reading.
