[lbo-talk] Not getting laid is the same as being oppressed? (was An Empire of NGOs)

Ah, been wanting to use this Michel Houellebecq quote for awhile now, and the "heteros who don't get laid is similar to oppression of gays," plus the sex-lib talk, seems like a good time to trot it out:

"In a totally liberal economic system, certain people accumulate considerable fortunes; others stagnate in unemployment and misery. In a totally liberal sexual system, certain people have a varied and exciting erotic life; others are reduced to masturbation and solitude."

- Houellebecq, from _Extension du domaine de la lutte_, 1994

Cheery Schopenhauer type stuff, no?

"This whole notion of 'sexual liberation' strikes me as highly problematic though, as it seems that the appeal of many of the kinds of practices Brian has espoused (e.g. mummification) lies precisely in the fact that they defy social conventions."
