As far as I know, there's no systematic research that supports the 
claim.  It was originally an anecdote offered by someone who ran a 
domestic violence shelter ("it sure seems like we get a lot of cases on 
Super Bowl weekend").  That said, it's certainly a testable hypothesis; 
archival data on domestic violence incidences on any given day of the 
year should be available.
