Does under capitalism, yeah. Have to have scarcity, otherwise markets just won't work. But surely you can see that want in the midst of abundance is ridiculous? Artificially maintained want in the midst of abundance, just to prop up the market capitalist system is an obscenity?

The fact that a small minority enjoy the better life you describe can arguably be justified in the context of material conditions that cannot sustain a good life for all in any event. But once material conditions make it possible for all to enjoy a reasonable standard of living, obscenity is the only way to describe the artificial maintenance of poverty merely in order to prop up an outmoded market system of distribution?
