I was legal observing at one of the solidarity actions in Smithfield, NC, a former Klan stronghold. At its peak, I'd say about 200 to 250 people showed up, which organizers seemed satisfied with. There was a second action after the main rally at the Johnston Co. Airport where extraordinary renditions flights are said to be flown out of -- about 100 people showed up to that and organizers later told me their expectations on that action were exceeded -- so that's good news.

There were two major downsides. The first downside was that there was very little press. The second downside was that there were about 30 exceedingly obnoxious counter-protesters with the Gathering of Eagles who were screaming at folks, blowing air horns and bullhorns at them, etc. There's no question it got under a lot of people's skin (many of whom were associated with liberal Christian groups) but I doubt it will deter anyone from protesting in the future.

There's a lot of video of the counter protesters here, although it doesn't come close to capturing the raving idiocy that came out their mouths when they were yelling at protesters (e.g. "take your protest to a mosque," "tell that to Daniel Pearl," some guy was going on about "liberal Jews" and so forth): http://katysconservativecorner.typepad.com/katy/
