Actually, it does matter. Some folks will always learn outside of the university, but universities are indispensable centers of knowledge, research and learning. Advanced degrees and the university system are the last monopolies of the US Empire. That privilege is in the process of disappearing -- the EU/East Asia are building up their R & D networks fast.
