While you're correct in claiming we do not know what the cat is doing we 
may be able to figure out why it is doing it.
Find out through MRI and PET scans what portions of the brain are active 
in cats when they cache food and how it differs from brain activity when 
it shares food. Compare those to the brain activity when it brings in a 
dead animal. Easier written than done.
