Yeah, calling it an "ode to drug culture" (like the Slate writer does) is iffy. The Onion piece is better, referring to as Iggy's description of coming off drugs. Either way, it is basically about heroin, coming clean from it or whatever. "This song has been used in commercials for Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines, although the lyrics were heavily changed so that, for example, 'with liquor and drugs' was replaced by 'looks so fine.'" -- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lust_for_Life_%28song%29

"Yeah, I'm through with sleeping on the sidewalk No more beating my brains No more beating my brains With liquor and drugs With liquor and drugs."

I guess Iggy is celebrating his 60th birthday over & over again. In San Fran he also celebrated it by stage diving into the crowd back in April. http://www.reuters.com/article/peopleNews/idUSN2029103520070424

"I thought Lust for Life was an anti-drug song? I seem to recollect him saying as much on stage when I saw him, ahem, almost 20 years ago. He played Moscow they other day. It was his 60th birthday."
