Lately I've been struck by how young Ivan, age 20.5 months, has taken up the word "New!" as a desirable attribute of commodities. I recently got him a new toothbrush and a new sippy cup, and both were identified with that word (and you could even hear the exclamation point!) for several days after. The capitalists are tapping into something fundamental and primitive with that appellation, that's for sure.
