UAW workers walked off the job after a union-set deadline passed without an announced breakthrough in contract talks with General Motors. GM has pushed hard for the creation of a voluntary employees' beneficiary association, or VEBA, as a replacement for an open-ended guarantee of benefits for UAW retirees.
