Dear Staff,
The search committee for the General Manager is fully underway. The committee was set up by the WBAI Local Station Board composed of 3 unpaid staff, 3 paid staff and 3 members of the Local Station Board. We have received several dozen resumes and are in the process of ranking job candidates for possible interview. The final date for application is September 30th.
We have advertised in Current, City Limits, New York Times, National Assoication of Black Journalists, El Diario, Gotham City Gazette, the Idealist and many free on-line publications and listservs.
If you know of a suitable candidate please advise them to apply by this Sunday Sept 30th. The ad and job description follow, or they may go to our website at http://www.wbai.org.
Once applicants are interviewed we will rank the those we will select for a re-interview. We will ask finalists if they are willing to come to a public meeting for a question and answer session before the names are sent to the executive director, or acting executive director for final consideration.

WBAI seeks a visionary general manager. WBAI is a listener-sponsored radio station with a 46-year history of broadcasting.
Pacifica Radio's WBAI-FM in NY is a non-corporate listener-sponsored radio station with a 46-year history of broadcasting news, public affairs, music and cultural programming from a unique progressive perspective, AND a commitment to maintaining a strong base of community involvement and activism within its listenership. WBAI seeks a visionary general manager who can supervise the overall operation, administration, programming and financial activities of the radio station in keeping with Pacifica's mission of peace and social justice, while working closely with a large and diverse body of paid and unpaid staff and community representatives.
WBAI is a 50,000-watt, non-commercial radio station, one of five sister stations of the Pacifica Foundation, the oldest network of community-based radio stations in the United States.
Job Responsibilities
The General Manager supervises a professional staff responsible for day-to-day station operations. This staff includes a program director, operations, public affairs, news, and arts directors, and a fundraising and development team. The General Manager must supervise a large team of paid and unpaid programmers who are responsible for the station's programs.
The General Manager prepares and manages the annual budget, directs a comprehensive development and fundraising strategy and ensures station compliance with applicable CPB and FCC regulations, OSHA and EEO mandates, as well as relevant state, local and federal laws. S/he exercises supervisory authority over all station staff and oversees all broadcast operations, including technical, programming and internet services. The general manager will work cooperatively with the executive officers of the Pacifica Foundation, and in collaboration with a 24-member Local Station Board elected from among the station's listener-sponsors and paid and unpaid staff.
The successful candidate will possess a college degree and minimum six years of related experience, or equivalent combination of education and expertise.

Salary: Approximately $65K, based on experience.

Qualifications
Education/experience: a college degree and minimum six years experience or equivalent combination of education and expertise in the fields of broadcasting, communication, journalism, or other related fields.
* 5 years of managerial experience. * Experience supervising staff, preferably in a nonprofit or broadcasting environment. * Experience working in a volunteer-driven, grassroots, social change institution, preferably a media organization. * Excellent written, oral and interpersonal communication skills. * Proven management and organizational skills, including planning, budgeting, fundraising and organizational growth and development. * Proven track record of ability to recruit and retain staff of diverse backgrounds. * A record of accomplishment working in a diverse, multi-cultural, and intellectually charged setting. * A demonstrated commitment to independent media, grassroots perspectives and peace and economic/social justice.
