NEW DELHI (Reuters) - India plans to spend $5 billion to extend a rural jobs scheme to cover the entire country from April 2008, two years ahead of schedule, in an apparent indication the government is gearing up for early elections.
The scheme, which guarantees the unemployed 100 days' paid work a year, was one of the Congress party-led government's key pledges to the poor after it came to power in 2004. http://in.reuters.com/article/businessNews/idINIndia-29769620070928
