The United States has lost vast numbers of citizens due to its own occupation of the land. That would make the authors statement "It [the US] did not lose vast numbers of citizens, or huge swathes of territory, as a result of occupation or dismemberment." a false statement. Like I said,. it depends upon your perspective.
