[WS:] I do not really understand what is so special about being immersed in popular culture. One can be familiar with its workings without following its vicissitudes on a continuouis basis, no? If anything the latter poses the danger of losing the sight of the forest from among the trees.

We need to disinguish between aloofness - manifestested by conspicous disdain for popular culture (of which I confess I am sometimes guilty) - and the simple lack of interest, time or both.
