I think the US media are continuing the process of falling out of love witj the Georgian government, which started when Saakashvili repressed the opposition last year. It's getting harder and harder to maintain the illusion that Saakashvili is a nice democrat.

Neither territory, by the way, is historically part of Georgia. They were both stuck on in the Soviet period. That's part of the problem.
