No, it's when a country tries to expand its actual physical borders - I think you'll find that's the classic definition of imperialism.

But the more modern definition is - it's true - a country that tried to *unduly* increase its geopolitical influence - through military means.

By your definition, of course, the U.S. is just trying to "increase its geopolitical influence" and therefore is not imperialist.
