For the listmembers interested in the strange sounding math-physics exchange the other day, do wiki for `Lagrangian point'

You find a very nice illustration. The five points labelled L1, L2, ... represent locations in the gravitational fields of the sun, earth and moon that remain `stationary' with respect to the system.

The gravitational field lines represent the `forces' and the distance between the lines represents the magnitude and direction of the forces.

If you imagine all the bodies erased from the diagram, then the field would remain and represent the `energy' or gravity picture of the system.

Besides the prettiness of this view, it also has applications in modelling cosmology---which was why I was interested in the topic in the first place....
