It only appears this way to the cynical and the discouraged (both bad things for professed members of the left to be). Density is actually about building working-class power, but you'd never know that reading the sample of SEIU stories forwarded to this list. Here's one story today from LA that didn't make the editorial cut:

LAX strike authorization expected By Art Marroquin Staff Writer Article Launched: 08/20/2008 11:00:00 PM PDT

A strike authorization vote on Wednesday appeared headed for approval by about 2,500 unionized janitors, wheelchair attendants, baggage handlers and other service workers at Los Angeles International Airport, a move that could cripple travel plans as the Labor Day weekend approaches.

The workers, represented by the Service Employees International Union Local 1877, are demanding pay hikes, more health benefits and better job training from their respective employers, who are contracted by airlines operating at LAX.

Results of the strike authorization vote were expected to be tallied late Wednesday night. If it is approved, the workers could walk off the job as soon as today, but union officials said a strike will only be called when all other options are exhausted.

"The airlines must stop the tailspin that's hurting passengers and communities alike," said Mike Garcia, president of SEIU Local 1877.

"They have failed horribly to provide professional, quality jobs for airport service workers here at LAX and across California," he said. "They have engaged in a tailspin that has forced wages and benefits down to a level where people cannot survive in these jobs."
