Well, the expected swing to right-wing Hindu chauvinism has thankfully
not happened - at least so far. Voters in the recent state election
dashed the BJP's hopes of capitalizing on the "terror" plank. And
there have been no communal riots - yet. Furthermore, the very
understandable rage against the ineptness of the political class as a
whole hasn't translated into a boycott of elections - voter turnout
has been above average in all constituencies, ranging from the very
upmarket South Delhi to remote villages in the Kashmir valley. The
anger and a sense of almost personal violation cut across the board,
however (remember that one-third of the victims were Muslim), and the
demand for some sort of telling action against the perpetrators has
not diminished one bit. The reaction in India's Urdu press (whose
readership is largely, but not exclusively, Muslim) summarizes the
general mood quite well:
