[lbo-talk] In India, Muslims Mark a Somber Eid

Well, the expected swing to right-wing Hindu chauvinism has thankfully not happened - at least so far. Voters in the recent state election dashed the BJP's hopes of capitalizing on the "terror" plank. And there have been no communal riots - yet. Furthermore, the very understandable rage against the ineptness of the political class as a whole hasn't translated into a boycott of elections - voter turnout has been above average in all constituencies, ranging from the very upmarket South Delhi to remote villages in the Kashmir valley. The anger and a sense of almost personal violation cut across the board, however (remember that one-third of the victims were Muslim), and the demand for some sort of telling action against the perpetrators has not diminished one bit. The reaction in India's Urdu press (whose readership is largely, but not exclusively, Muslim) summarizes the general mood quite well:
