The Soviet Union's fascination with Bollywood goes back to the '50s and Raj Kapoor's peculiar brand of 'socialist realism'. I had personal experience of this in Germany in the early '80s when a young Bulgarian woman burst out into a Raj Kapoor melody the moment I was introduced to her. Kapoor himself paid tribute to his Russian admirers in his 70's epic 'Mera Naam Joker', one of whose three 'parts' depicts the protagonist's unrequited love for a Russian trapeze artist.
