Chickens have laid unfertilized eggs since they were domesticated
thousands of years ago.
As a matter of fact any female bird will lay unfertilized eggs if you
keep them out of contact of males.
Put a robin in a cage and it will lay anywhere from 3 to 12 unfertilized
eggs per year.
Chickens lay several eggs a week but generally not every day for 3 years
or so at which point their fecundity drops rapidly.
