Doing a subject search on CATNYP <http://catnyp.nypl.org/> for "peddlers" gives some interesting results.
I guess the real issue is that while most every culture has itinerant peddlers of some sort, the stereotype of the peddler, their relative (low) status and mythology within the culture, is key to answering this question about hucksterism.
