One of Socrates' buddy-buddies was the most bloodthirsty of the Tyrants Sparta installed at the end of the Peloponnesian War. Plato's presentation of Athens was pure malicicious nonsense. As one classical scholar put it, the Athenian Democracy lasted nearly two centuries, and when it fell its defenders went down knowing what they were fighting for. And for 2000 years reactionary pricks in the academies have been slandering athens.
